1. To provide quality classes and study assistance for adult students in GED.
The Spanish GED courses taught at Casa ALBA by volunteer teachers, and in cooperation with NWTC, have been a great success. In our first year, 19 of the 39 students achieved their GED within a year of study. This has motivated an enthusiasm among others, increasing our numbers of students for this 2nd year to 60+ students. In conjunction with GED, basic computer classes will be offered as needed.
Our GED students are fortunate to have a GED coordinator and two GED volunteer teachers that work long hours and offer tender care to our Hispanic community, to afford students a better education and greater chance of future success. We now host 7 classes and 18 hours of class time per week. Classes offered are in: Math, Language, Science and Social Studies |
Cooperating with Head Start, UWGB Education program, Brown County Library and other groups we get the word out to parents and encourage them to benefit from these family-centered programs.
Bilingual classes for 3 and 4 year olds and their parents or caregivers are also offered in Casa Alba's "La Escuelita." This year, due to Covid-19, these classes will be held On Line each Wednesday afternoon, with volunteer teachers. This Program provides our Hispanic youth with the best possible start to their academic career while acclimating parents to the school system. |
4. To initiate parent information programs which better enable them to encourage their children to pursue higher education.
Our goal is to encourage Hispanic teens to graduate and plan for college. Many parents do not have an understanding of the system and resources available to their children, or even the benefit of a college education. We are interacting with parents, providing them with needed information and encouragement. This is done in cooperation with UWGB, Wisconsin DPI, high school and college counselors, and several volunteer educators.

6. To offer drivers education classes in Spanish.
Casa ALBA hosts drivers education classes. Books are free and have been donated by Green Bay Public Schools. Anyone, of any age, may participate in the class. Once a session has started, new students will need to start with the next offered session. Participants will be able to get insurance from an agent, without a social security number at reasonable rates. A local garage will inspect a vehicles for course attendees at no charge and will identify what work that a police officer would look for during a road inspection.
