Families who are new to the country and to this area have a lot of adapting to do. They face even more challenges than the average family. Casa ALBA is available to help connect them with existing resources and provide support. This ranges from resourcing for Spanish-speaking parents of children with special needs through youth sports training.

A group of seniors (“Tercera Edad”) meet weekly to share stories and experiences, engage in various activities, work on hand-crafter items, share favorite foods, plan field trips and request seminars. We are working on collaborative relationships with ADRC, Curative Connection, YWCA and funded in part through a donation from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
We are thankful for our Hispanic senior citizens, who visit us each Wednesday, for camaraderie and fellowship. On occasion, we have made field trips, like to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, near Champion. They also exercise at the YWCA, which is followed by reflection and friendship. |
2. To encourage sports participation and better nutrition through the Green Bay Youth Sports Training Program.
The Green Bay Youth Sports Training Program encourages more Hispanic youth to participate in athletics. The youth sports training program, started in 2013, offers an opportunity to Hispanic youth to try sports in a safe and fun environment. The goal is to see if you like it … and become less timid. The youth group started with eight youths, but the group has now grown to over 40 participants. The group emphasizes better nutrition and training in multiple sports including running, soccer, basketball, and other sports.

Armando Torres helped inspire the formation of the Green Bay Youth Training Program. Armando ran cross country for Green Bay East High School. He finished 2nd in the 2011 Green Bay City Meet cross country championship and was the city champion for cross country in 2012. He was three time city champion in the two-mile. He finished 6th in the Wisconsin State High School Division I Championships in 2012. He was the Green Bay Press Gazette runner of the year in 2012. |
4. To encourage parent initiatives and planning for families fun activities.
As Casa ALBA becomes a familiar place to many adults they feel more comfortable offering ideas for various types of activities that can be enjoyed as families. This is an area of creativity that is being nurtured and will develop in the coming months.
